Dressing your reborn doll: clothes, fabrics and fit

How to choose outfits that fit well, protect the silicone and make changing clothes easy and enjoyable.

What clothes are best for a silicone reborn doll?

Choose soft, light-coloured clothing with generous openings and a comfortable fit. Check the doll’s measurements rather than relying only on newborn clothing labels. Open fastenings fully, gather sleeves before guiding the hands through, and support the body throughout. Follow the doll’s care instructions for fabric and colour-transfer precautions.

Why fabric matters

Silicone can pick up colour from dark or strongly dyed fabrics, especially with prolonged contact. Light, colourfast clothing is the safest choice. Wash new clothes before use where the care label allows. Avoid unverified dark fabrics rather than testing them on the doll; follow the supplier’s fabric guidance.

Finding the right fit

Baby clothing sizes vary between brands, and dolls have different proportions to real babies. Measure your doll’s length, chest and head, and look for stretchy, soft fabrics with wide neck openings and poppers or buttons that open fully.

Changing clothes gently

Support the doll on a clean, soft surface. Gather each sleeve or leg of the garment in your hand first, then guide the doll’s hand or foot through, rather than pulling fabric over the fingers.

Take your time around the fingers and toes, which are the most delicate parts of a silicone doll.

Hats, bonnets and headbands

Soft hats can complete an outfit beautifully. Avoid anything tight around the head, and be careful with hair: do not brush, wet or style it until you know how it is attached and what the care instructions recommend.

Nappies and layers

A nappy can help clothes sit naturally, and a light vest underneath adds a barrier between the silicone and outer layers. Choose soft, breathable fabrics and avoid anything with rough seams or scratchy labels.

Storing outfits

Keep clean clothes folded in a drawer or box away from direct sunlight. Store dark items separately from the doll so there is no accidental colour transfer while they are not being worn.

Build a small wardrobe that is easy to use

Start with one easy-opening outfit, a soft layer and a comfortably fitting hat if you want one. Try the fit carefully before buying several pieces in the same clothing size. A garment can be long enough but still too tight at the wrist, ankle or neck.

Inspect seams, labels and fastenings before dressing. Keep hard decorations and exposed hook-and-loop fasteners away from painted areas. If an item needs pulling to fit, stop and choose something with a wider opening.

When changing an outfit feels difficult

Lay the doll on a clean padded surface and work on one sleeve or leg at a time. Bring the garment toward the hand rather than pulling the hand toward the garment. Do not use oils, powders or other products to make clothes slide on unless the doll’s own instructions specifically allow them. Ask for advice if clothing becomes caught.
